Let's see where and how much Hungarian drivers park

Hungarian drivers park for an average of 2.5 hours on-street and 6 hours off-street, in parking lots, and in office and P+R car parks for more than 9 hours, according to data provided by Parkl's mobile app with over 250,000 registered users. The charging time for electric cars has not changed since 2020, but the power uptake has doubled.

With the Parkl app, parking off-street is easier than ever.

Statistics from the last 3 years show that on average it takes 2 hours 30 minutes to park on-street, while parking in parking lots takes 6 hours 10 minutes. In parking garages located near transport hubs, this time can be much longer, for example in Budapest One parking facility in Újbuda, near Kelenföld station, vehicles usually park for almost 10 hours in the indoor building. This occupancy rate is much closer to the figures for P+R car parks, where the average time spent by drivers commuting between their workplace and the agglomeration is 9 hours 54 minutes.

"The busiest periods for parking are spring and autumn, when daily activity is around 10-15 percent higher, especially in September and May. In many cases, the parking lots also serve as an alternative to the surrounding P+R car parks, as they are conveniently accessible, with indoor spaces where, in addition to good value for money, it is also possible to charge electric cars" underlined Zsolt Somogyi, CEO of Parkl.

On weekdays, the number of on-street parking spaces is increasing continuously, with an overall increase of around 15-20 percent on Friday compared to Monday. In office buildings, users tend to park in the middle of the week, whereas Mondays and Fridays are more likely to be spent working from home. On average, cars commuting to work spend 9 hours 33 minutes waiting for their driver in the garage, according to Parkl's office building locations.

Twice as much energy in the same time

The charging time for electric cars has not changed at all between 2020 and 2023, averaging 4 hours 15 minutes for AC (22 kW) and just over 45 minutes for DC (50 to 400 kW) charging points. However, the power consumed doubled during this period: while in 2020, electric cars consumed an average of 6.7 kWh of electricity during charging at Parkl's charging points, by the end of 2023, the average was 13.8 kWh.

The spread of electric cars and digital & mobile technologies is also leading to spectacular technological advances in the design of new parking facilities to meet the changing consumer expectations.

"The Corvin Innovation Campus office building, which was opened last year as a continuation of Corvin Promenade and which also uses the Parkl technology, now has 10 per cent of its parking spaces equipped with electric charging. And the Budapest ONE parking facility, which opened two years ago and has almost 300 spaces, offers up to 30 electric cars that can be charged at the same time. In addition, safe, fast, convenient and contactless parking, including the use of mobile apps, is now a basic requirement for users" said Dr. János J. Berki, Director of International Office Leasing and Asset Management at Futureal, the developer of both projects.
